Mice

Several hundred mice currently live at the Max Planck Institute for Biology Tübingen.

The mice at our institute are normally kept in groups, corresponding to their natural social behaviour. They live in individually ventilated IVC cages, these are "open" cages, each equipped with bedding, a running wheel and a tube or house, as the rodents love to hide. They have unlimited access to food and water unless an experiment makes it necessary to restrict their food or liquid intake. The lighting simulates the change from day to night. Mice are skillful climbers; they use the cage floor and also hang upside down on the bars of the cage cover. Mice like to cuddle up with their fellow mice.
